Wilson’s Fundraising Tops $700,000 After Outburst - Roll Call

Wilson’s Fundraising Tops $700,000 After Outburst - Roll Call: "In the wake of the controversy Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) sparked by shouting “You lie!” during President Barack Obama’s address to a joint session of Congress on Wednesday, a Republican source said the Congressman had raised about $700,000 by Friday afternoon."

Coming soon: the "You Lie!" bumper stickers, tee shirts, and coffee mugs. This may become the conservatives' rallying cry for the 2010 elections.

Professor McKenzie,

Is the picture a message to the White House?

If it is -- this lends new meaning to the term "hot pants"?????

You're right about the mugs: http://www.zazzle.com/you+lie+mugs There's apparently an appropriate "you lie" mug no matter what side of the aisle you're on.

One should ask what is going on here. The remark was certainly inappropriate, and Rep. Wilson has apologized to the President.

President Obama's statement was technically true re HR 3200, but it was misleading. The words in the bill and what may happen could be different.

The shout has created a more careful examination of the issue by the press (which the press should have done without the shout). In another thread, Beth referenced the article, Shout Draws Focus to Illegal-Immigrant Issue, that provides important context. The article states that "proposed amendments to close potential loopholes" have been defeated in committee. Without a means of enforcement, the provision that prohibits coverage for illegal immigrants, may be meaningless.

The vagueness of the language in HR 3200 is the underlying cause. The shout has focused some attention on a few of the 950 pages. What about the rest?

What President Obama described could be covered in a 50-page bill. What is in the other 950 pages?

Trust depends upon saying what you mean and meaning what you say. What may be occurring is that many citizens understand the vagueness in HR 3200 and fear the potential unknown and unknowable results.

Since President Obama will likely sign any health care legislation that reaches his desk, his preferences seem irrelevant. What matters is what is in the bills that Congress is writing.
