Gated areas numbers going up | hattiesburgamerican.com | Hattiesburg American: "Apparently, they're on the rise nationally. In a two-year period, the number of housing units inside communities 'secured with walls or fences' rose from around 7 million to more than 10 million.
That finding is from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Housing Surveys of 2005 and 2007. Slightly fewer than half, or about 5 million, were 'owner-occupied' in 2007; the rest were rented."

They say it takes an average of 8 seconds to enter a gated community.
