Retailers See Back-to-School Sales Slowing - NYTimes.com

Retailers See Back-to-School Sales Slowing - NYTimes.com: "Halfway through the back-to-school shopping season, retail professionals are predicting the worst performance for stores in more than a decade, yet another sign that consumers are clinging to every dollar."

People are reusing last year's backpacks, pencils, and markers. How do I know that? Because we are doing it. That is Izzy, Hunter, and Conor at Land's End in San Francisco. Responsible father that I am, I didn't let them jump.

What gorgeous kids! Glad you kept them on solid ground. :)

I wanted to re-use backpacks but my oldest now needs a backpack with wheels (says the school) and my youngest's backpack had some problems and needed replacement.

We're still buying other stuff too, because we have to submit stacks of brand-new supplies to the school each fall, e.g., each student needs to submit 3 reams of copy paper, 2 24-ct boxes of crayons, 2 bottles of hand sanitizer, 4 packs of sharpened pencils, 3 packs of eraser tops, 1 package paper plates, 1 box band-aids, 12 glue sticks, etc. etc.

Some of these supplies are kept for use by the student (e.g., 1 set of headphones--which we are re-using from previous years) but most of the supplies will be for classroom use.

Same here. We are buying classroom supplies for the schools. Then there are all the extra fees for band, choir, sports, spirit wear, etc. Oh, and did I mention that 2/3 of my property tax bill goes to the two public school districts?
