Commentary: Franken victory is not funny - CNN.com: "The metric system is the kind of thing that you can expect from the 60-vote filibuster-proof majority Democrats now have in the United States Senate."

Well, I've never thought Franken was funny anyway. But how anybody can think that converting to the metric system is a crazy idea is beyond me. The US, Liberia, and Burma, are the only three nations in the world that don't use the metric system. Does that put us in distinguished company, or something?

Franken is just one more clown to add to clowns like Pelosi, Waxman, Boxer, and Reid. Of course, the joke is on the U.S. electorate for electing these fools.

I've seen some funny anti-metric letters to the editor over the years. My favorite was from someone who grumped, "Our ancestors came to America to get away from the Old Country. Why should we convert to the Old Country measurement system?" a question that is ridiculous on many levels.

But finally the Senate will have a professional comedian to join the 99 amateurs already in progress

I like Franken, actually. Although it's partly because I can't stand Limbaugh, and partly also because I can't stand Norm Coleman, so it's sort of a negative response reaction.

But in fairness we're not quite as alone on measuring systems as it looks. Britain still uses standard measurements for distance and speed limits, and still complains loudly about having to use metric for weights and measures, but happily uses Celsius and gets very confused with Fahrenheit. Go figure.
