Evan, both statements are consistent with Obama's announced tax plans.
As his website points out, he would lower taxes on some (most) Americans, and raise taxes to 90s-era levels on other (wealthier) Americans.

It's reasonable to debate whether his plan is good for America, but it isn't really accurate to imply that there's a contradiction. Though it's your blog, of course. :)
