Now Harman says he and his wife are pushing for security cameras in the Lake Charleston Community. "One camera for their AC unit, one camera for their clubhouse," said Harman naming the surveillance that exists at the community clubhouse. "Nothing for security wise for the community itself."

So before making a decision, the HOA is asking the Sheriff's office to do a survey to find out what other associations are doing. I find that a strange request. Are the public law enforcement officials supposed to serve as private security consultants for HOAs?

Good point Evan. Along these lines there is a much more serious problem going on in the local government and HOA arena. Local government will not patrol HOA property - even those on public streets. Instead local government expects the HOAs to contract with local law enforcement.
Now the tax dollars were already taken from these homeowners but the city isn't giving them law enforcement services. The homeowners are being forced to pay extra via HOA assessments to contract with local law enforcement personnel. These local law enforcement personnel might be dressed in uniform, etc. but it is very deceptive. They are nothing but hired gun mercenaries at this point. This type of arrangement is going to result in less and less respect for law enforcement because you can't tell who they are working for.
