HOAs in the Media: 5 Scandals affecting community associations in 2012
Interesting piece that finds five big "scandals" relating to HOAs:
1.  George Zimmerman and the Trayvon Martin shooting
2.  Embezzlement and fraud
3.  Erroneously blaming the actions of a historic district on HOAs (this isn't a scandal--let's not get hypersensitive)
4.  Banks not paying assessments on foreclosed properties
5.  Citizens' Property Insurance in Florida

Interesting piece that finds five big "scandals" relating to HOAs:

1. George Zimmerman and the Trayvon Martin shooting
The industry folks should be more concerned about cases like Glassel, Mahmoud Yousef Hindi, or Campos. In each of those cases, the homeowner attacked his oppressor - HOA board members and their cohorts. In two cases the board members were killed. In the other case an HOA "patrol" member was at least temporarily paralyzed after being shot for assisting an HOA president to chase down two female teenagers and harassing them. Homeowners are learning not to "take it" any more from board members OR vendors.

2. Embezzlement and fraud
The only thing "new" here is that there has been more media exposure. Lots and lots of embezzlement.

3. Erroneously blaming the actions of a historic district on HOAs (this isn't a scandal--let's not get hypersensitive)

Exactly - no scandal. There are also plenty of bad HOA corporation stories that are true and can be readily proffered up at any time. However, let's face it, the HOA industry folks hate flags, veterans, and kids. There is a never-ending stream of stories about veterans being targeted for flying flags, and families of active military personnel being persecuted for displaying any type of support banner for the family member on active duty. How many such stories would the industry folks like in lieu of this one story?

4. Banks not paying assessments on foreclosed properties
Well the story refers to not paying assessments until after foreclosure. The bank doesn't own it until the foreclosure - so what's new.

5. Citizens' Property Insurance in Florida
Yeah, tip of the iceberg. How many have been persuaded to purchase coverage under a "master policy" and haven't figured out that their HOA doesn't own the policy, that such a purchase prevents the board from being able to fire the management company, and that the purported coverage is actually shared with an unknown number of HOA corporations?
