A year ago, I told the incoming president that coming in with such high hopes in such a severe economic downturn might have him down 20 points in the polls after his first year in office. While Obama tried to temper expectations about employment numbers given that employment is late to recover from a deep recession, for most Americans employment is perceived as a leading and not lagging economic indicator. I'm waiting for a call from the White House just like I got after President Clinton's approval ratings fell as the mid-term elections loomed.
